Teacher Killed and 25 Girls Abducted in Gunbattle at Educational Institution in Nigeria
Gun-wielding individuals have fatally shot an educator and seized a minimum of 25 learners in an attack on a girls' secondary school in the northwestern part of Nigeria, authorities have confirmed.
The criminal group breached the public educational institution for female students in the Maga locality within Kebbi State at around 4 AM local time on the start of the week, officials stated.
The armed individuals "exchanged fire with security forces on duty in a gun duel" before scaling the perimeter fence and abducting the learners from their dormitory, authorities disclosed.
A school employee was fatally shot while defending the students. A second sustained gunshot wounds and is now receiving treatment.
Witnesses reported a sizeable number of assailants, identified in the area as outlaw groups, who came shooting randomly to generate terror.
Area inhabitants disclosed to media that the gunmen subsequently marched a group of female students into adjacent wilderness.
The authorities announced they had sent "supplementary tactical squads, in coordination with armed forces and community security teams" to the area.
A coordinated search and rescue operation is currently ongoing in nearby woodlands and suspected escape routes.
In the past few years, learning centers in northern Nigerian regions have regularly come under attack for militant organizations, who routinely perform seizures to seek ransom payments or gain negotiating power with authorities.
The assault in Kebbi State highlights the persistent security crisis plaguing the region, resulting in households in Maga in a condition of terrified weariness as they expect and desire their children's secure homecoming.
Protection challenge in the northern regions of Nigeria has intensified significantly in recent months, with educational institutions bearing the brunt of the conflict.
