Hardline Former Legislator José Antonio Kast Chosen as Chile Incoming President.

In a decisive runoff election, ultra-conservative figure José Antonio Kast has secured the presidential office in Chile.

A Resounding Win

After more than 99% of ballots counted, Kast garnered 58.17% of the votes, defeating leftist contender Jeannette Jara, who earned 41.83%.

This marks Kast's third presidency, having earlier been defeated by the sitting president, Gabriel Boric, in the 2021 runoff.

Campaign Built On Law and Order and Immigration

Recognized for his strong socially conservative views and praise for the era of dictator Augusto Pinochet, Kast's campaign was largely built on promises to tackle growing crime and radically curb migration.

He repeatedly pointed to immigrants, especially the roughly 330,000 illegal individuals in Chile, for security issues. Throughout the campaign, he delivered an stern warning for them to exit before the March 11 handover or face removal.

His plans envisioned Trump-inspired measures such as constructing camps, high walls, perimeter fencing, and bolstering the armed forces presence on the northern border.

Part of a Continental Trend

Many commentators see Kast's win as part of a wider right-wing wave in the region, coming after recent electoral wins in countries like Ecuador, Bolivia, and Argentina.

However, other analysts further view it as a continuation of the predictable swing of power between left-wing and right-wing governments since Chile's return to democracy in 1990.

Governing Lacking a Clear Mandate

In spite of his clear electoral triumph, Kast will not have an overall majority in parliament, neither in the lower house nor the Senate, even if all right-leaning parties are counted together.

This legislative reality may hinder his plans, such as a pledge to reduce public spending by $6 billion within 18 months—a proposal for which he has yet to detailed concrete steps.

"We have several things about what a Kast presidency will look like that we don't know because he has not said the way he will achieve them," commented a political analyst.

The analyst added, "Regarding the economy, it is very likely we will see austerity policies common for the right-wing. However where there is much less ambiguity is on law and order, because that has been his central theme throughout the race."
