An acclaimed author, a respected historian of the American frontier, has authored a new book titled Gunfighters United, which explores the careers of the famed lawman and the notorious gambler. He states displeasure with the well-known line from a classic western: “When the tale becomes fact, print the myth.”

“Every historian cites it, they just repeat it endlessly,” the author remarks lightheartedly. “And it’s truly not accurate. I composed a account. I aim people to be engaged in the era, but I just get so exhausted of that quote. The myth is legend. It never become truth. People can recount the folklore but it doesn't make it truth.”

The Notorious Shootout at the Corral

In Arizona's Tombstone, on a day in October 1881, Earp and Holliday were participated in a shootout that came to be known as the Gunfight at the OK Corral. With Earp’s brothers, the pair confronted the outlaw gang, men hunted for crime and rustling. In under 60 seconds, three Cowboys were killed and Holliday was wounded, as were his companions.

Even though being one of countless Wild West scraps between officers and outlaws, it became folklore, not least thanks to famous pictures including the John Ford film and another renowned film.

Uncertainty and Variation in Firsthand Accounts

“A lot of what we learn about it is confirmable,” Gardner noted of the real shootout and its aftermath. “But I always go back to one of the best remarks, and it’s a very plain comment. Addie Borland, who witnessed the shootout, stated: ‘I don’t know. Everything was chaotic.’”

Among the witnesses present had conflicting versions. Evidence from the investigation is also unclear. Observers who were friends of the gang were lying, and each version is slightly different. It’s infrequent when a person agrees on any point.

“Among the people there were confused,” he continues. “So it’s really difficult to uncover it, and it took place in a brief moment.”

Legend-Building and Hollywood Depictions

He lived into the Hollywood era, dying in 1929 at the age of eight decades. First portrayed on a silent film film in the 1920s, he eventually became the subject of major mid-century westerns. In relatively recent years, he has been acted by a star in the 1993 film and another actor in Wyatt Earp.

He drills through such storytelling to find the people beneath. His works span the breadth of the old west, from a legendary figure and his pursuer to a civil war guerrilla.

Multifaceted Characters of Wyatt Earp and Holliday

Born in Monmouth, Illinois in 1848, Earp was too young to participate in the American Civil War, though he attempted to do so. When he was 20, he was appointed a law officer in a small town. Missteps were made. Earp faced a calamity with the demise of his partner, Urilla, from illness in the 1870s. Subsequently, as a official, he retained tax money he obtained.

“We don't know why he held it,” the author states. “He flees, and finds himself in Oklahoma. He’s detained for taking a horse, and then he’s in Illinois, and he’s operating a bawdy house. Eventually he goes back west, and he arrives in Wichita, Kansas.”

In spite of his complex background, Wyatt performed well as a peace officer. Newspapers praised him often. In one case, he detained a drunk man who had $500 on him. He secured the funds for the drunk and handed it back when he released him from jail.

Contrasting Characters of the Duo

Gardner highlights the clear contrast between the pair. Earp was aspiring, wanting to better himself and achieve offices like high office. Doc, hailing in Griffin, Georgia in the mid-19th century, was a dentist turned risk-taker. In contrast to Wyatt, he didn't exhibit evidence of settling down.

“He just moves from one boomtown to the next one,” he notes. “He won't truly transform. And some of that’s his addiction to gambling. Part of that is tuberculosis, coping with that and treating himself, whether it’s with drink or eventually medicine.”

Legacy and Scholarly Significance

The new book shows a compelling aspect of the old west: the friction between law and chaos, and the efforts of authorities to exert order over newly forming towns. The extent of paperwork that resulted from a shootout – proceedings, affidavits, decrees for restitution – might surprise those familiar with simplified portrayals of the period.

Furthermore, Wyatt and Holliday were entangled in divisive factional conflicts. Earp was a member of the GOP, while Tombstone lawman Johnny Behan was a opponent, creating a competition for power and office.
