A standout among Avatar's best episodes is honored with an exclusive Magic: The Gathering collector's set.
Typically, clip shows face criticism among audiences as an unnecessary time filler, or sometimes tolerated as a requirement for shows in the age of episodic releases. This wasn't always true, and Avatar: The Last Airbender demonstrated this with "The Ember Island Players," a popular segment from its final season now being granted an exclusive Magic: The Gathering Secret Lair drop.
Highlights regarding the Secret Lair
The complete Secret Lair superdrop for the soon-to-release Avatar: The Last Airbender set was unveiled earlier this month. Containing five Secret Lairs, and even though one titled "My Cabbages!" is certainly funny homage to the show's most famous minor character, the other collections seem somewhat less imaginative, with one notable exception: "The Ember Island Players."
Based on installment 17 in the final season of Avatar: The Last Airbender, this Secret Lair contains these particular cards:
- 1x Phantasmal Image portrayed as "Absolutely Accurate Actor"
- 1x Braid of Fire
- 1x Cursed Mirror
- 1x Mask of Memory
- 1x Thespian's Stage
What makes this episode is special
Fans of the show warmly cherish this installment, which functioned as a recap of Aang and his companions' quest prior to the final episode. In contrast to standard summary installments, or compilation episodes, "The Ember Island Players" was not driven by budget restrictions or scheduling problems. The producers genuinely intended to give fans an opportunity to recap the show's narrative, however, they opted to execute it with flair.
Throughout the segment, the heroes observe a stage show depicting their exploits on a stage set on Ember Island, called The Boy in the Iceberg. The entire performance is inaccurate, cheesy, and utterly comical. It succeeds since it plays on the characters' views regarding their own identities, setting them against with how the world (and notably the Fire Nation citizens) perceives them. It has the perfect balance of introspective humor, and it becomes possibly the finest interpretation of the show we have had.
Appeal and pricing
When it comes to cost-effectiveness, this represents an excellent Secret Lair due to one key factor: Braid of Fire. This card sells between $20 and $40 through card retailers as of now, while for $29.99 you can snag the full set, or for $39.99 for the shiny edition.
Magic's Avatar: The Last Airbender edition will be available for advance previews starting November 14 and launches globally on Nov. 21.
